Loi or Loy means "to float" and a Krathong is lotus-shaped vessel, usually made of trunk and leaves of the banana plant, containing a small candle, three incense sticks, flowers and a coin.
In the evening, Thais gather along rivers, canals, lakes and ponds to float Krathongs, to pay homage to Phra Mae Khongkha, the goddess of rivers and waters. It is believed to wash away the past year's sin, so life can begin anew.
This festival has its origins in the Hindu tradition.Nang (Mrs.) Noppamas was the first one who started to create Krathong in the Sukhothai period.
